IMPORTING PERSONAL EFFECTS INTO MALAYSIA
 

A) iNTRODUCTION
Many customers have enquired as to the procedure and requirements for importing personal effects into Malaysia. Tamadam is able to provide door to door service for the importation of personal effects into Malaysia. Malaysian Customs distinguishes between Malaysians who have resided overseas who now wish to bring their personal effects back to Malaysia and non-Malaysians who wish to import personal effects into Malaysia. Examples of the former would include Malaysian students studying overseas and Malaysia expatriates who have worked overseas.

B) LOCALS WHO HAVE RESIDED OVERSEAS

  • To be eligible to import used personal effects, you must have resided overseas for at least two years.
  • There will be no import duty and sales tax imposed for used personal effects.
  • To import personal effects, you are required to furnish the forwarding agent (Tamadam) with the following shipping documents:

(i)  Original bill of lading endorsed by yourself.

(ii) Original invoice and packing list.

(iii) Photocopy of the your international passport.

(iv) Appointment Letter to appoint a forwarding agent (Tamadam). Sample can be downloaded here.

(v)  For certain items, you will need to furnish the receipt for the purchase of the item, for example televisions, if they look very new. Furthermore electircal items may require a JBE (Jabatan Bekalan Elektrik) or SIRIM sticker each. As long as the item is used it should not be subject to duty.

Customs may still examine the items to check that there are no pornographic materials, pirated CD's/DVD's, etc.

C) FOREIGNERS WHO ARE MOVING TO MALAYSIA

  • To be eligible to import used personal effects, the person must have a valid Work Permit or be approved for "Malaysia My Second Home" program.
  • There will be no import duty and sales tax imposed for used personal effects.
  • To import personal effects, you are required to furnish the forwarding agent (Tamadam) with the following shipping documents:

(i)  Original bill of lading endorsed by yourself.

(ii) Original invoice and packing list.

(iii) Photocopy of the your international passport.

(iv) Appointment Letter to appoint a forwarding agent (Tamadam). Sample can be downloaded here.
